"My child hates math" is one of the most common things we hear from parents at AchievoPath. After years of one-on-one tutoring, we've found it's almost never about the subject itself — it's about one missing building block that turned every lesson after it into guesswork.
Find the gap, not the grade
A student struggling with algebra in Grade 9 is often still shaky on fractions from Grade 6. Instead of drilling the current topic harder, a good tutor tests backward until they find the exact concept where confidence dropped.
Three things to change this week
- Praise the process ("you tried three methods") instead of only the answer.
- Let them explain a problem out loud — teaching back reveals real understanding fast.
- Separate homework time from correction time, so mistakes don't feel like failure in the moment.
Math confidence is built in small, consistent wins. Once a student closes their specific gap, the rest of the subject usually opens up on its own.
